Artist Selection Process 2009
Each year, one curator from the Art Gallery of Ontario is appointed as the lead curator for The Grange Prize. He or she nominates three persons (one Canadian and two from the partner country) to participate in the selection of artists. The selection committee may consist of academics, other curators, writers, etc. from a range of fields – all of them having worked with a particular focus in contemporary photography. Each selector nominates several artists and makes recommendations to the committee as to why these artists should be considered for The Grange Prize. The committee meets and reviews the submissions and agrees on the final four candidates (two from Canada and two from the partner country). These four candidates then compete for the $50,000 CAD prize, via the public online vote on this website.
The selection committee for the 2009 Grange Prize is comprised of:
- Laura González Flores, Professor, National Autonomous University of Mexico
- Alfonso Morales Carrillo, Director Luna Córnea Magazine, Centro de la Imagen, Mexico City
- Maia-Mari Sutnik, Curator of Photography, Art Gallery of Ontario
- Dot Tuer, Chair, Criticism and Curatorial Practice, Ontario College of Art And Design
